Seminar: War and Peace in Asia

Spring '21

This seminar focused on exploring the complex geopolitical history that underlies many of the modern conflicts happening across Asia. These conflicts exist at the intersection of colonial legacies, religious history, foreign intervention, and military strategy, and have second and third order effects on everything from feminism to Choco Pie sales. For the first half of the semester we examined several areas of conflict - the Korean peninsula, Kashmir, Afghanistan, and China - and learned to use a range of sources to understand the history and context of the issue. The second half had us writing a research paper on a specific topic of our choice, related to an active conflict in Asia. For my paper, I explored the challenges associated with verification in attempts to denuclearise the Korean peninsula. The class gave me a greater appreciation of how complex even the smallest aspect of these geopolitical conflicts can be and will inform how I interpret and respond to news about war in Asia and the world from now on.
