The annual Grassroots Onsite Work Internship sees a cohort of GlobeMed students create and implement projects that help strengthen our partnership with our partner organisation in Thailand, Social Action for Women and Children, or SAW. The experience and goals for GrOW have varied a lot over the years, from its initial format as a 3-week relationship-building trip to the multiple project teams working virtually this past summer. Spending 12 weeks with a group of people equally passionate about supporting SAW has changed my relationship with GlobeMed and fundamentally affected how I view mutual aid and my responsibility to the global community. While the projects we were able to complete online looked very different from traditional GrOW projects, they will still be important tools and platforms for our chapter to use moving forward. Relationship-building is an important part of the GrOW experience but was the most difficult to replicate in a virtual environment. Looking ahead to the next internship, we hope to take the lessons of flexibility and responsiveness from our online experience and marry them with the benefits of an in-person trip to create a better model for the future of GrOW.
